As Above So Below is a seven part series of floating landscapes painted on silk. I propose something sublime, surreal and mature in hue, expressing balance, flow, and serenity, using colours in ways that are soothing and meant to evoke stillness and peace. Through a series of paradisiacal landscapes whose centre is majestic mountains with the sun as the source of illumination and all that is good, set amidst floating clouds, it offers me a contemplation on the idea of our personal and universal existential attempts, of ordering the microcosm of our lives with the macrocosm of the universe’s life. In many cultures, mountains represent the sacred connection between the earth and the heavens, as they simultaneously convey an immensity of presence and an ephemeral transcendence. They naturally evoke a sense of journey and quest, while also evoking a sense of stillness and arrival. In Vedic mythology, a central mountain serves as the cosmographic link between the world and the celestial realms. I wish that in our gratitude for and remembrance of a paradisiacal realm, we all move a little closer as individuals and societies, in our journey to reach our highest selves.
