‘Something Old, Something New’ is a series about pattern gibberish, of bright and whimsical layers of *new* on *old* “khata” paper from Jaipur. Khata, as in ledger paper, for record keeping. Some papers are old stamp papers from the 1920s, if you zoom in, you’ll see they are from the “Jeypoor Government”, worth 4 and 8 annas. And some envelopes too. All lucky finds, from here and there, and a paperwallah. I’ve always wanted to do something with written/already used paper. Something about the layer of history it brings, that I know nothing about - but yet, I’d like to give it a beautiful flourish in the present context. I also often need fun painting projects to work on alongside my more time consuming paintings. So this is a result of need: of creative breaks, love of colourful patterns, left over paint on my palette and something to do to keep myself going, creatively, and metaphorically speaking. I don’t know if this is the only layer I’ll add. My overarching question is - do I try to give them any more meaning than what it actually is - me having fun with left over paint on my palette at night? I don’t have an answer just yet, just the need to put it out there in the world. For the moment, they have made me happy. And hence, there will likely be more to come of this kind of work, in more permutations and combinations.
